Physical Characteristics

A cycle of works displayed at an exhibition in the Onamato Gallery in Kraków, in October 2013, and closely connected with that place. I cut out silhouettes of recognizable people from photographs documenting events held at the gallery and hid them at the back of a frame, under two layers of tracing paper, thus effectively hindering the identification of the person(s) in question.

The exhibition explored the issue of ambiguity and fluidity of the interpretation of image rights. The title, Physical Characteristics, is an expression taken from the legal definition of image. The idea behind the project was to stimulate a discussion on the rights of anonymous people on photographs – rights that are more and more often enforced, but also repeatedly abused. The ambiguity of legislature concerning the presence of anonymous faces in photos restricts the artistic licence of photographers and hinders public access to the coverage of events.

Wystawa poruszała zagadnienie niejednoznaczności, płynności w interpretacji prawa do wizerunku. Tytuł, Zespół cech fizycznych, to fragment prawniczej definicji wizerunku.
